Period Longsword - Fighting from the Bind. Master Lot Ramirez. 2 hours.
This Class will incorporate elements from Historical Fighting texts, both Medieval and Renaissance, to explore methods of controlling the centerline and using cuts and thrusts more effectively in combat by reading and responding to our opponent's blade in the opening sequences of the fight. This class will solidify fundamental understandings and techniques, though it will be more accessible for students who already have a foundation in the core skills of throwing cuts and thrusts, movement, and judging distance. The class is great for steel or rattan fighters who are interested in exploring how to use a longsword in a historical style.
Students should bring a longsword simulator, steel, rattan, and synthetic are fine as long as they are blunt and have no sharp points or dangerous edges. We will try to match simulators amongst partners. Also protective gear for light contact (i.e. mask/helm, gorget, gloves/gauntlets)
Introduction to Cut and Thrust—Master Gawin Kappler. 1 hour.
In this class we will discuss how to get started doing cut and thrust combat in the SCA. We will discuss the necessary armor and how to acquire it, provide basic instruction on how to deliver cuts, and discuss how to recognize and acknowledge cutting blows. The class will assume that participants are currently authorized in SCA heavy rapier combat, but all skill levels are welcome. Please bring your weapons and armor if you have them.
Hitting People Better—Master Gawin Kappler. 1 hour.
This class will discuss the mechanics behind delivering more efficient, better controlled, and safer thrusts and cuts. We will then work through drills and pell-work in order to help you improve your strikes.
Fundamental Mechanics for Rapier (1 hour). Master Christian Fournier
This class will examine structural elements of guards, stances, and blade positions, and how to find and exploit the positions your opponent takes in order to create positions that are advantageous to yourself (and conversely, how to take safe positions that avoid giving your opponent much to work with). Our focus will be on SCA thrust-oriented heavy rapier, and the class is designed for students at all levels: The specific curriculum will be adapted to the needs of the students attending. Required equipment includes a rapier, mask, and gorget.
Rapier from the Ground Up By Don Aeron
This is an intro to rapier course, though it's also an intro to historical Italian rapier. It lays the foundation of Capo Ferro and Giganti and covers all you need to know to then go back and study on your own.
Making Italian Rapier Work by Don Aeron

Combat Anatomy or, "If that was a real sword, what would it have just done to you?" By Master Tivar
This is an examination of what happens when a real sword hits a human body. It begins with a brief overview of human anatomy, and what happens when a sword penetrates various body parts, both in reality and under SCA rules. Thrusts, draw cuts and chops will all be studied using a sharp blade and "The Machine". The class wraps up with an audience-participation session.
History of SCA Rapier Combat by Master Tivar
When and where were the first SCA rapier bouts fought? What is the origin of the White Scarf? Did they *really* use rattan daggers in the old days? (Didn't that hurt?) Why can't you win Crown via rapier combat? What does *that* rule mean, and why is it in the rulebook? Come learn the answers to these, and many other questions, from someone who was there for most of it.
Basic Marshalling by Master Tivar
What is the primary role of the marshal? When should you call "hold"? How do you deal with a fighter who's misbehaving? How are melees different from one-on-one bouts? This class is an overview of the field marshal's duties from the beginning of the fight until its end.
Beginning Rapier and Dagger by Master Tivar
To my mind, rapier and dagger is *the* best fighting style available. You can attack with either hand, you can defend with either hand. You can engage at range or up close. Come learn to think with both hands.
